Off Isn't Really Off!
Most electronics that are plugged in are using some electricity even when they're off. Some use a lot of electricity. For example, a plasma TV in active standby mode can draw 1.4kW. Yikes! This chart from www.good.is shows relative idle loads for a variety of appliances. Some electronics need to stay on—clocks, DVRs, home security systems—because you want to keep the programming or need the protection. But lots of devices in your home are just wasting energy and your money.

Stop the Waste: UnPlug Stuff
There are some easy and inexpensive ways to reduce your home's idle load. The easiest way is to unplug them. What about that old VCR? It might be using 50W and it hasn't been turned on in 2 years. Or maybe the old TV in the guest room can be unplugged for now. For electronics you use regularly, smart power strips and socket timers are the easiest way to really turn them off. This fun and informative video from www.energycircle.com can help.
